BRIKENAM CENTRE – KAKAMEGA KENYA
OUR VISION
All children will become learners for life!
OUR MISSION
To teach students to Read, Think and Communicate in order to build a future for themselves and their communities by becoming lifelong learners.
There are 3 Key words: TEACH BUILD BECOME! each DEFINING an area of responsibility for the school.
OUR CORE BELIEFS
The beliefs that drive our Mission and Vision
Learning is a natural phenomenon that always occurs when information is mediated to bring out relevance and meaning to the learner.
All students can learn and should be given a chance to learn
Learning comes out of desire and the need to know
The desire to learn resides in the heart; the need to know resides in the brain.
What We Seek to Do Daily for Every Child.
For each student, teachers must create relevance in order to awaken desire; relevance is created by convincing the student of their need to know what we wish them to learn.
Teachers/mediators also must create a desire to learn. Arousing the student’s curiosity by finding out the student’s personal interests creates the desire to learn.
Establishing relevance and creating desire is the art of teaching. Creating relevance and arousing desire generates self-motivated life-long learners.
The role of the teacher is that of mediator, not teller. Mediation occurs between the teacher and learner when relevant information is presented in a meaningful context. The mediator/teacher uses questions to create relevance and spark curiosity. When students are able to answer the mediator/teacher’s questions learning is occurring. When students begin to apply the learning beyond the classroom into real-life, personal situations, life-long learning is beginning.
Reading, Thinking and Communicating are the essential elements and skills that students must possess in order to change their own world and the world around them. We believe that students so equipped will succeed in their own life’s pursuits and help change the world around them.
